The Data Classification Initiative is aligning UW–Madison with the Universities of Wisconsin’s revised Data Classification Policy (SYS 1031) to simplify how we categorize and protect information. The change is aimed at reducing confusion, strengthening compliance, and lowering data security and privacy risks. The initiative is informed by campus feedback calling for clearer examples, training, and tools that make classification easier to understand and apply. Success will mean a unified three-tier model, supported by “just-in-time” guidance and automation that help everyone confidently classify, store, and share data as part of everyday work.
